From Istanbul's Ancient Shoemaking Tradition to a Modern Luxury Footwear Brand

In a fashion landscape increasingly dominated by fast trends and disposable products, Charix has quietly built a devoted following by embracing a different philosophy: exceptional craftsmanship, timeless design and footwear made to last.

Founded on the principles of slow fashion and artisanal shoemaking, Charix transforms a centuries-old Turkish leather shoe into a modern luxury essential, combining handcrafted quality, everyday comfort and effortless versatility for today's global traveler.

The Istanbul Origins of Charix

The story begins in Istanbul, where founder Suley Ozbey discovered the traditional çarık, a handcrafted leather shoe deeply rooted in Turkish shoemaking heritage. While exploring the historic streets and artisan workshops of his native city, he became captivated by the shoe's minimalist silhouette and enduring appeal.

Recognizing its potential for modern lifestyles, Suley envisioned a contemporary version that would preserve the original design's authenticity while enhancing comfort, durability, fit, and craftsmanship.

Working alongside experienced artisans in Istanbul, he spent months refining every element of the shoe, from leather selection and construction techniques to ergonomics and wearability. The result was Charix: a handcrafted leather shoe inspired by tradition yet designed for modern life.

A Modern Footwear Brand Built on Craftsmanship and Purpose

After more than a year of development, testing, and prototyping, the first Charix collection launched in 2016.

The inaugural production run of 400 pairs arrived in Washington, D.C., where Suley's longtime friend Rossen Tsanov joined the venture as co-founder. Together, they shared a vision that extended beyond footwear.

For Suley and Rossen, Charix represented a commitment to intentional living, choosing fewer, better-made products that bring lasting value rather than fleeting satisfaction.

This philosophy remains central to the brand today. Every pair is designed to offer timeless style, premium comfort, and exceptional versatility, making Charix shoes equally suited for travel, work, and everyday wear.

Why Travelers and Professionals Choose Charix

Over the years, Charix has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile leather shoes for travel and daily life.

Frequent travelers appreciate how easily the shoes transition between airports, city streets, museums, restaurants, and evening outings, all while packing light and maintaining a refined appearance.

Professionals who spend long hours on their feet, including educators, healthcare workers, creatives, and entrepreneurs, have also embraced Charix for its rare balance of comfort and sophistication.

Many customers return season after season, often building collections in multiple colors and styles.

Handmade Leather Shoes Crafted in Istanbul

Today, every pair of Charix shoes is still handcrafted in the brand's Istanbul atelier by skilled artisans who combine traditional leatherworking techniques with modern precision. Only premium natural leather is selected for production, allowing each pair to breathe naturally, mold to the wearer's foot over time, and develop a distinctive patina that reflects years of use.

The shoes feature removable leather-lined insoles with memory foam cushioning and built-in arch support, providing all-day comfort without sacrificing elegance. This commitment to quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship has become a defining characteristic of the brand.

A Slow Fashion Brand That Stays Intentionally Small

While many fashion companies pursue rapid expansion, Charix has chosen a more personal path.

The company remains intentionally small, with every order packed, every customer inquiry answered, and every phone call handled directly from its Washington, D.C., warehouse and showroom. Customers are often surprised to discover they are speaking directly with one of the founders, reflecting the personal relationships and attentive service that have shaped the brand since its earliest days.

The Future of Charix

As the brand approaches its next chapter, Charix continues to focus on timeless footwear rather than seasonal trends.

Looking ahead, founders Suley and Rossen plan to introduce two new silhouettes, including the company's first sandal collection. While the product line will expand, the mission remains unchanged: creating handcrafted leather footwear that celebrates artisan craftsmanship, enduring quality, and the simplicity of well-made design.

In a world increasingly defined by excess, Charix offers a compelling reminder that true luxury often lies in owning less, but choosing better.
