In Tuscany, land is never merely owned; it is stewarded, interpreted, and passed forward with intention. With the 2024 acquisition of Tenuta Pinino, nestled in the historic hilltop town of Montalcino, Il Borro Toscana took another deliberate step in a journey that has always been guided by place, patience, and purpose. The move introduced Brunello di Montalcino DOCG into Il Borro’s expanding wine portfolio, marking a defining moment for the Ferruccio Ferragamo family’s viticultural vision.

Montalcino is no ordinary addition. Revered for producing iconic Brunello wine, the hilltop territory represents discipline, longevity, and an uncompromising relationship between soil and time. With Tenuta Pinino, Il Borro does not simply broaden its offerings; it enters a dialogue with one of Tuscany’s most storied terroirs.

The estate encompasses 21 hectares, of which 16.24 hectares are planted with vines. The vineyards are carefully divided among 7.67 hectares of Brunello di Montalcino, 5.42 hectares of Rosso di Montalcino, and 3.15 hectares of Sant’Antimo Sangiovese, a composition that reflects both prestige and versatility. The acquisition brings approximately 80,000 bottles annually into Il Borro Wines’ production, with Brunello forming the cornerstone of this new chapter.

For Il Borro, whose origins lie in the Valdarno Superiore basin, the move represented an evolution rather than a departure. Owned by the Ferruccio Ferragamo family since 1993, Il Borro Toscana spans 1,100 hectares of organic farmland, where vineyards coexist with olive groves, forests, and agricultural land in a carefully balanced ecosystem. Prior to the Montalcino expansion, Il Borro’s vineyards covered 84 hectares and produced wines celebrated for their elegance, structure, and respect for the land.

At the helm of the estate’s wine direction is Salvatore Ferragamo, whose commitment to viticulture has helped position Il Borro among Tuscany’s most dynamic producers. Alongside him, Vittoria Ferragamo leads the estate’s sustainability initiatives, which have earned international recognition for their environmental and social responsibility.

The results are measurable. In 2023, Il Borro Toscana recorded over €22 million in revenue, an 18% increase over the previous year. Its wine division alone grew by 20%, with sales rising across all international markets. These figures reflected not only demand, but confidence in quality, consistency, and a long-term vision rooted in authenticity.

The decision to invest in Montalcino was therefore both strategic and symbolic. Brunello di Montalcino stands as one of the world’s most recognized fine wines, particularly within the American market, where appreciation for premium Italian labels continues to grow. By incorporating Tenuta Pinino into its portfolio, Il Borro strengthened its position as a leader in the high-end wine sector, offering greater diversity while maintaining a cohesive identity.

Ferruccio Ferragamo, President of Il Borro, described the acquisition as a natural progression. The expansion elevated the estate’s production while honoring its founding principles: excellence, integrity, and respect for tradition. Brunello, with its rigorous standards and aging requirements, aligns with Il Borro’s philosophy of quality over quantity.

Simultaneously, wine alone has never defined Il Borro. The estate’s growth follows a holistic trajectory, encompassing agriculture, hospitality, dining, and international brand presence. From its luxury hospitality collection to its dining establishments around the world, Il Borro has cultivated an ecosystem where lifestyle and land are inseparable. Wine, in this context, becomes both expression and invitation, a way to experience Tuscany beyond the glass.

Tenuta Pinino added a new voice to that story. Rooted in Montalcino’s historic landscape, its vineyards bring depth and distinction to Il Borro’s range, enriching an already diverse portfolio of grapes and styles. The result is not expansion for its own sake, but refinement, an ability to speak fluently across Tuscany’s varied terroirs while maintaining a singular, recognizable identity.

As global demand for premium wines continues to rise, Il Borro’s investment signaled confidence in the enduring value of craftsmanship and place. In an industry increasingly driven by scale, the Ferragamo family’s approach remains measured, intentional, and deeply Italian.

With Tenuta Pinino, Il Borro does not chase prestige; it earns it, one vineyard at a time. And in Montalcino, where time moves slowly and excellence is non-negotiable, the estate found a fitting new home for its future.
